Course Outline


Course Philosophy
This course is concerned with the organization of visual material, we will focus on how we see, interpret and make sense of visual stimuli.  The individuals in our class will be required to think and behave as artists.   Art education is concerned with pointing out the values that surround the creation and cherishing of art forms, and the ways in which people express their feelings in visual forms.  During this course you will be asked to make and defend qualitative judgments about artworks.

Three Major Components of Visual Learning:
1.       Drawings or delineations: all the ways we record visual information and discoveries
2.       Compositions or structures: all the ways images are put together to create meaning
3.       Encounters with art: where we meet and how we respond to visual imagery

DRAWINGS
Students will:
Record: 
Students will acquire a repertoire of approaches to record visual information
Combine description, expression and cognition in the drawing process
Investigate:
Students will develop the ability to investigate visual relationships in the environment and in their recorded images
Develop and refine drawing skills and styles
Communicate:
Students will express personal visual competencies and insights
Investigate varieties of expression in making images
Articulate and Evaluate:
Students will apply visual, analytical and critical skills and develop control and competency
Use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to analyze their own works

COMPOSITIONS
Students will:
Components:
Students will become familiar with the components of images, media techniques and design elements
Extend their knowledge of and familiarity with the elements and principles of design through practise in composing two and three dimensional images

Solve teacher directed and student developed problems by varying the dominance of design elements for specific visual effects

Relationships:
Students will analyze the relationships among components of images
Solve teacher directed spatial problems of movement and direction in the creation of compositions,
Use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to interpret and evaluate both their own works and the works of others
Organizations:
Students will express meaning through control of visual relationships

Encounters
Students will:
Sources of Images
Students will investigate natural forms, human-made forms, cultural traditions and social activities as sources of imagery through time and across cultures
Investigate the process of abstracting form from a source in order to create objects and images

Students will understand that the role and form of art differs through time and across cultures
Compare the image content of certain periods
Impact of Images:
Students will understand that art reflects and affects cultural character
Become aware of the relationship between function and form in artistic productions

Sketchbook Component:
Your sketchbook will be assessed throughout the year as part of your cumulating activity and should involve a variety of different mediums (drawings, mixed media, collage, abstract drawings, sketches, conceptual designs, cartoons, doodles, art articles etc.)
** Please sign and date each work

Take Home Projects:  There will be 10 take home projects based on the elements of art.  These projects are to be completed at home during the year. You must hand in 4 of these projects November 30, the other 6 are due May 30. A booklet outlining all 10 projects will be handed out at the second week of September.  (Most of the projects can be completed in your sketch books).

Student Expectations:
·         Treat everyone with Respect
·         All Studio projects must be created INCLASS during class time. I will not permit you to take any Studio projects home to work on, you may sign your project out during the day if you have time at lunch that you wish to work on it. Your creation process must be demonstrated daily, since this component is worth 40% of your mark.
·         Come prepared with sketchbooks and art history book every day
·         You are responsible for your own clean up
·         Ipods and mp3 players can be used AFTER instruction, the use of cell phones are not permitted in class
·         No food or drinks should be consumed in the art room.
Submitting Projects Late:
All projects submitted late will receive a mark of ZERO, if a valid reason exists extensions may be given, provided you speak the me at least ONE DAY BEFORE the project is due.
If you are legitimately ill on the day of a due date, it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to hand in the project the very next day that they return to school, if this does not happen the project will receive a ZERO grade.
